All Things Royal: The 2017 Royal Winter in Toronto

Did you know that over six thousand animals arrive to Toronto in November? They come as best in show to be judged and to educate children and adults about the importance of agriculture.

In 1920, the Coliseum was built at the Exhibition Place grounds in Toronto after a group of Ontario farmers created a committee of farmers and national standards to breed and judge livestock. King George V approved the use of the prefix “royal” for this spectacular event; and the Royal Winter Fair officially began in 1922. The rest is history!

This year, the Royal opens on November 3 and runs through to November 12th. The fair is designed to encourage visitors to pet and feed the animals, learn about Ontario farmers, and discover the importance of Ontario farm fresh food. The fair is interactive, entertaining and delicious!

Things have changed a bit since the 1920’s but with horses, sheep, goats, birds, alpacas, chickens, rabbits, and over 4000 head of cattle, the Royal is a true experience of where the farm comes to the city and where urban meets rural.

This year’s fair something for everyone. There are so many diverse exhibits designed to teach, inform, and entertain that you will leave with a great appreciation for farm life. Some of this year’s highlights include:

• Chefs: Historians Chefs, Arcadian Chefs, Wine & Cheese Tasting
• Goat Yoga: Check online for tickets

• Presidents Choice Animal Theatre: SuperDogs, herding, Birds of Prey
• Square Dancing
• Royal Horse Shows: 1,000 competitors and $1 million in prize money! Competitors include Olympians Kent Farrington and McLain Ward
