PREPARING THE PAPER TEMPLATES –

To create the brim (A) I traced around the perimeter of the packing tape.

To create the top (B) I used a water glass and traced around the rim.

To create the band (C) I chose to make it 1 ½” thick.

To determine the length to fit with the top, I measured the diameter of the top, multiplied that by 3 and added ½” for the back seam

——————————————————————————————-

CUT OUT TEMPLATE AND FABRIC –

Cut out the paper templates with your paper scissors.

Lightly press the fabric flat.

TIP – IF YOU ARE USING FLEECE, USE A PRESSING CLOTH BETWEEN THE FABRIC AND THE IRON

Lay the pattern pieces on the chosen fabric and pin in place.

Draw with pen or chalk around the perimeter of the three pattern pieces.

Cut out around the perimeter of the fabric pieces with your fabric scissors.

Place the Top template (B) in the center of the brim and trace around it.

Fold the brim in half and snip a small amount into the inner circle to allow ease of cutting the interior hole.

——————————————————————————————

STITCH THE BAND –

Place the band in front of you and overlap the left and the right by ½”

Pin to hold in place.

Using a running stitch, create two parallel rows of stitching to create the band.

——————————————————————————————

PIN TOP AND BAND / PIN BRIM –

Fold the top, band and brim in half.

Put a pin at each fold

Fold the top, band and brim in half again (they are now in a quarter fold)

Pin at each of those folds. You will have 4 pins in each piece.

TIP – MAKE SURE THAT YOU USE THE SAME SIDE OF FABRIC.

———————————————————————————————-

PIN TOP AND BAND –

Line up the four top pins with the band pins.

Re-pin at the four quarters.

—————————————————————————————–

SEW TOP AND BAND TOGETHER –

Using a whip stitch, sew around the top edge knotting at the start and finish.

TIP– IF YOU USE A THREAD THE SAME COLOUR AS THE FABRIC IT COULD MAKE IT HARD TO SEE, A CONTRAST COLOUR CAN BE HELPFUL. TIP – WAXING THE THREAD BEFORE SEWING CAN MAKE THE SEWING MUCH EASIER.

—————————————————————————————–

SEW BAND AND BRIM TOGETHER –

Fold the band into four again.

Pin the open end pin at all four folds.

Match up the four pins on the brim with the four pins on the band.

Re-pin the four quarters.

Using a whip stitch around the edge, make sure you catch all the layers in your sewing, knotting at both ends.

Lightly press the brim.

TIP – IF YOU ARE USING FLEECE, USE A PRESSING CLOTH BETWEEN THE FABRIC AND THE IRON

EMBELLISHING –

Ribbon and yarn work well around the juncture of the brim and the band
